The programme derives from Vanessa's own experience in 1984 and Bob Geldof's call for action against famine.  First raising sponsored funds by losing weight, Vanessa assisted at the Live Aid concert and ran in Africa as part of a small British team to launch Sport Aid. Inspired by what she discovered as a volunteer, Vanessa changed her career, finally forming her own training company and the basis of what would become The Big Picture Leadership Challenge. A version of the course was piloted by Barclaycard where, over just two days, customer service staff transformed their offices with exhilerating energy and raised £1000 for North Tees General Hospital.  A longer version was conducted for Frank Haslam Milan, a construction company based in Sunderland.  During the 18 months in which Vanessa served the firm, £15,000 was raised for a local children's charity, three senior managers were promoted to the Board of Directors and company turnover soared to an astonishing 325% growth.
